This would be my go-to motivational quote about cauliflower 🙂
IF CAULIFLOWER CAN SOMEHOW BECOME PIZZA... YOU, MY FRIEND, CAN DO ANYTHING!
These days there is nothing that cauliflower can't do - it replaces, rice, potatoes, and even your pizza crust! Seriously!
I am not complaining! We at Framed Recipes L-O-V-E cauliflower. Cauliflower is loaded with fiber & also is rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin B-6 and antioxidants. No wonder it is a staple ingredient in healthy, low-carb recipes.
Before we learn how to cut cauliflower into florets, lets see how to buy and store cauliflower. I am sure this tutorial will come in handy for you.
BUYING, STORING AND PREPPING CAULIFLOWER
- Try to buy densely packed cauliflower with no blemishes. I also make sure the leaves look fresh.
- Buy fresh cauliflower for immediate use or use it in a day or two.
- If the cauliflower comes in a plastic cover, it increases the chances of it rotting. If you have to store the cauliflower for extra days, wrapping it in a paper towel would help to absorb the excess moisture and prevent rotting.
- Cut the cauliflower into quarters and remove the central stem/core which makes it easier to cut into florets. Keep the florets uniform in size to ensure even cooking. Discard the core. [See the video at the end].
- Do not discard the leaves. I use them in sambar or a quick stir fry. It tastes delicious. I also chop the leaves into smaller pieces and freeze them for later use. If you make vegetable stock at home, you can use these stems. Zero Waste!
- Rinse the florets well in water. I usually pat dry them with a kitchen towel to remove excess water.
- You can freeze cauliflower florets. After rinsing the florets, pat dry to remove excess moisture and lay them in a single layer in a freezer safe tray. After a couple of hours, transfer the florets to a freezer bag and freeze for later use. { I have read that blanching the florets in hot water for a couple of minutes prior to freezing enhances their flavor}.
