Delicious blueberry oats smoothie. Loaded with berries and oats and milk (use a dairy free milk to make a vegan version). Perfect breakfast for the people-on-the-go.
It is summer time!
It is smoothie time!
During summer, we try different smoothies with different fruits and flavors.
I cannot think of any other fun and easy way to load up on nutrients at the beginning of the day itself.
Smoothies are fresh, light and keep you full for a pretty long time. Which means you reach for the junk food (the same junk you are trying to avoid) much less.
This blueberry oats smoothie is a simple recipe, a perfect smoothie for the people on the go.
Though I have used blueberries in this blueberry oats smoothie recipe, feel free to add any berries of your choice. If you are using fresh berries, may be you can add a few ice cubes to make the smoothie refreshingly cool.
I L-O-V-E using frozen berries in my smoothies, because they make smoothies colder which I love especially during summer.
One of the frugal things I have started doing is buy berries on sale, wash them and the portion-size them and freeze.
Your mornings just became that easy with a wee bit of prep work. Just grab the frozen berries and blend.
This blueberry oats smoothie does not use any additional sugar, the sweetness comes from the dried apricots or dates used in the recipe. (I have also used raisins when I ran out of dates and dried apricots. It was super yum)
But if you prefer slightly sweeter version, feel free to add sweetener of your choice.
Let me tell you that color of the smoothie depends on the ingredients you decide to use. Apricots gave me a duller grey color, but you already knew that, didn’t you?
You could also add additional protein powders and stuff to make it even healthier.
This recipe is also about reminiscing of the times my friends and I would meet to practice for a little jig for the Telgu Ugadi function over the spring . We often met at my friend Shalini’s place for the practice and she always made sure that we were well fed. We needed lot of energy during the dance practice and smoothies helped us a lot. Shalini used many different varieties of fruit – bananas, apples, oranges, strawberries, mango etc. Thanks Shalini. Hugs!
Blueberry Oats Smoothie Recipe Notes
- You can add any mixed berries you like to include in your diet.
- I have used frozen blueberries in the recipe. If you are using fresh berries, add some ice cubes.
- Instead of dates or apricots, you could also use about 1 tablespoon raisins.
- I use Vitamix for making my smoothies.
- If you like thicker version of the smoothies, reduce the quantity of milk. We like our smoothies to be little thinner consistency.
- Optionally, if you like, you can add any sweetener of your choice.
